Call for Artwork: Send Us Your DIY Bottle Bargains!

I attended a swap meet recently and was set on scoping out the best home décor bargains. Tall glass bottles, short glass bottles, mason jars, tinted glassware – anything that was semi-transparent and super functional I wanted to line up on my kitchen windowsill in a pretty little row.

And I found them, alright. The seller was asking a whopping $30 for each mason jar. Each! The aqua-tinted ones are harder to come by, so that might have been understandable, but the regular-sized clear jars went for the same asking price.

I picked my jaw back up from the floor, giving the seller a polite nod and a wistful compliment on his collection, hoping that the finds at the next vendor wouldn’t cost me my coffee budget for the week. You can imagine my glee at finding the same clear mason jars at our local Hobby Lobby store for just $1.50 each. I am now the proud (if slightly obsessed) owner of a set of eight mason jars. So many creative possibilities.

Are you also on the hunt for glass bottles or jars? Perhaps you have them already lined up on a shelf, but waiting for a few spare hours to creatively alter them. If you’re a budget-conscious crafter, consider creating a lovely gift set or complementing your kitchen’s color palette by altering your glassware. Vanessa, our Shoppe Manager, transformed her delicate stemware from ho-hum to super glam with this unique tinting technique (pictured above).

Hi – Love the creative ideas on your blog. There are plenty of common old canning jars to use for crafting, but there are also old Mason jars (called Fruit Jars by the collectors) that are very valuable ($$$), and very collectible. Here’s an article about a famous (in the hobby) Ball jar collection: http://finbotclub.blogspot.com/2009/09/i-had-ball-at-masons.html

Such wonderful ideas! I especially enjoyed the Victorian images as as bottle tops on vintage bottles. I fell upon a number of antique and vintage bottles. I have been refurbishing them and posting in my shop Mindful Resource on Etsy.

  3. I agree with Marianne Dow… some Mason jars are collectibles and worth the price due to condition and age. My aunt used to collect Mason jars and I can say that without a doubt, there is a HUGE difference between the $2 jars in the stores, and the collectibles.

That being said, unless an old Mason jar is damaged, I don’t think I could bring myself to alter it… so thank goodness for the cheaper reproductions!

I’ve been altering Mason jars, bottles, and old food and beverage jars since 2008 and it’s such a hoot!

All of these images are stunning! I love Mason jars-wish I could have the ones in my Mom’s basement! What a fun challenge~ I love how versatile jars are. They seem magical… :D
