A Daily Calendar Journaling Project Just For You!

Join our Shoppe Manager Vanessa Spencer as she shows you how to journal just a little tidbit every day and make it a tradition to continue to do so every year by creating this daily calendar project inspired by Design Sponge.

I decided to draw on a unique concept (because it’s simply an amazing idea) that I spotted on the Design Sponge blog, but adapt it by using the 7gypsies library drawer to store my daily journal pages.  Imagine in five years time, if you were able to look back and see what you did on January 10th every year?  This project provides a great way to record memories, whether it’s a big event like a wedding or simply a trip to your favorite park or farmer’s market.

You will need a journal card for every day of the year. Cutting out the 365 pieces of cardstock may take a little while, but it’s certainly worth it! The other step that may take some time is stamping the dates onto all of the cardstock pieces, but this can be split up over time.  I suggest creating a little assembly line by making some piles for the cards and doing all the months at the same time, followed by the days (all the 1’s for each month, then all the 2’s, etc.).  For this project, I used a simple Typewriter Alphabet clearly impressed set for the names and dates with an assortment of colorful StazOn Inks.

You may want to alter the cards and embellish them just a little – or save this part for when the inspiration strikes during your journaling process. There is nothing wrong with gradually doing the cards throughout the year – this definitely does not need to be completed all at once! For my cards, I added a few very simple elements using some of my favorite stamps with colorful inks and a bit of decorative tape.

On certain days, it might also be fun to include a photo of a special event or even a sleepy Saturday afternoon at home.  For more creative journaling ideas and prompts, be sure the pick up the latest issue of Art Journaling, or instantly download sold-out issues for your PC or Mac computer at e-Crafting.com.

How would you journal your year?  Comment below with your unique embellishing ideas for this daily calendar project, or if you’re feeling especially brave, share with us what “one day’s” post would be from your year in 2012.  Journal without reservation, journal without judgment, and journal daily!

  1. I try to journal my days with little vignettes (I paint with watercolors or draw with pencils) and a few comments, perhaps words from a poem that seem appropriate. I don’t try to chronicle the days; I just want to create a visual or verbal impression of what the day felt like.

I do the same kind of thing each year, using a daily planner/calendar that has large spaces for each day and every other page is blank. Lots of room for photos and ephemera, and I can write a little ditty summing up each day. They are so much fun to look back on and helpful for remembering when certain events took place.

I have been wanting to make one of these since I first saw the idea on Design Sponge. Thanks for the reminder and for carrying all the supplies I will need!

Merry Christmas to all the Stampington staff!

Sorry, I forgot to answer the question about how I would journal. . . I like to use a little of everything from Washi tape, to Copics, to watercolor pencils to embellies. The nice thing about using this type of “journal” is having an index card that you can embellish any way you like, and they don’t all have to be cookie cutter. You can make the embellishment fit the entry. For instance, Jan. 4th is my Brithday and I like to go to a local tearoom with my girlfriends and have a proper English tea to celebrate, I would journal about that and maybe stamp a teapot or cup and saucer, maybe color it with Copics.

What a very neat idea! I’m terrible at daily journaling, so something so cute and simple could be compelling. I think it would be fun to do each card as a miniature vintage-style postcard, two-sided, with room for stamps and address, addressing each day to someone I admire, with a quote from them below their name. The back of each card could be a collage that evolved year by year.

  6. Pam says:

Love this idea and think it will help me with constant journaling, which I’ve always wanted to do but never got started. Looking forward to hunting down the items I will need, in order to be able to start 1/1/13. Thanks for the idea and the help with supplies.

  7. Ellen says:

Thank you, this is fab! I think each month offers a glimmer of something magical. I think photos, quotes, some stamps and Washi tape would be wonderful ways, to remember the year! Sentiments wrapped in color :D

  8. Laura Stone says:

This is a great idea! I start each year with good intentions but by March I don’t keep up with writing in the journal. This way, I’ll make some simple art each day and can write just enough to capture the essence of the day.

  9. Jinx says:

You know, maybe I’m just old, but we used to call this daily journaling “our diary.” And we wrote in it at the end of every day to tell what we had done that day, how we felt about boys, what girls made us mad, how we were going to lose weight, etc. But I have to say, that “Journaling” makes me feel I now have the right to add my drawings, someone else’s quotes, favorite pictures from magazines, cute little things, etc. Wow! Have we come a long way…or are we just doing the same thing but fancier?

  10. Gloria says:

Great idea! Even though its January 12th I feel it’s never too late to start. Thanks fir the inspiration and the nifty how-to!
