One of my favorite art journaling motifs is a whimsical silhouetted woman. Rich in decadent color or dainty and sweet in design, it’s impossible not to be mesmerized by each artist’s take on the portrait of a lady. To explore the many imaginative ways women can be represented in art, we’ve compiled a collection of some of our most artistic and treasured  pieces, created with beautiful, independent flair.

Blue Whimsical Girl“…in this universe that is flawed and sometimes oh-so-rough, the great thing about the art I make is that it allows me to cast the brightest and most colorful attention to the most deserving innocent creatures of the universe.”

– Suzi Blu, Artists’ Café

Tip: “Allow your materials, such as old books and photographs, to inspire the images you choose to journal. Also, having a theme allows you to collect images and ephemera appropriate to that theme and helps get a page started.”

Crowned Whimsical Girl“Creating the layers and the grunge style opens up something inside of me that flies freely and breaks boundaries.”

whimsical girlTip: “A journal is a great visualization tool If there’s something new and brave you want to do – like teaching a class or self-publishing a book – create a journal page announcing it. Then you’ll be motivated to really make it happen!”

-Donna Mulholland, Art Journaling

Christy Tomlinson Girl“I have always loved art in one form or another – whether it was through wood fabric, paint, or jewelry.”

SOM whimsical girlTip: “If you don’t like a page, don’t give up on it…some of my favorite pages are ones that have been painted and worked over many times. The layers will make it more interesting.”

  40. Pat says:

Donna Mulholland #10. I’m partial to watercolors, love the way they dance across the paper. Donna’s lady here is so unstructured and uncomplicated. She is very much a focus, yet feminine.

Favorite theme? Nature. I love to incorporate things I find in our woods. I use vines in a lot of mixed media pieces, and I use native plant leaves and dried flowers in the handmade papers I mold.

  41. Lisa M says:

I adore Kathleen Barnes’s ladies; the colors and poses really speak to me. It takes a special talent to convey so much expression in figures that don’t even have “expressions!” Beautiful work. If I win, I would like the issue these ladies appear in so I can frame that page for my bedroom!

Gosh, hard to choose, but maybe the last one, #12. Hard to forget the expression on that beautiful face.

  51. sud dulle says:

My favorite is: #4 Caiti Santa Maria, Art Journaling Summer 2012. I remember my grandmother making me a doll when I was small and she had no face…when I asked her I she forgot a face, she told me no, now your doll can be whomever you choose to see her as. So I have always liked figures without faces and that are left up to the imagination.

  52. I really love #4 by Caiti Santa Maria. The whimsical blowing hair and the bright blue colors make me smile.

  53. Amy Davis says:

My favorite is #4, Caiti Santa Maria. I had a hard time choosing as they are all beautiful. That one spoke to me, it says freedom. Like riding in the car with the windows open and radio up with the wind whipping your hair around. I just love it!

  54. Lynn Martin says:

11- Christy Tomlinson, Artful Blogging Autumn 2011 I love the fall/muted colors, the mix of elegance/grunge. It reminds me of the image in my head of what I want to look like ‘when I grow up’…elegant, but still have a child-like playfulness. Beautiful.

  55. Valarie Holm says:

#10 by Donna Mulholland…I love the simplicity of it, and it’s so different than the others.

  56. Wendy Erman says:

I like #12. The blue and red do opposite things for me emotionally. If it was only blue, I’d say she was pensive or melancholy. But because of the cheeks, the mouth and even the bits of red on her eyes, she seems fiery and determined and intense.

  57. Diane Duda says:

They are all unique and lovely. I am most drawn to Suzi Blu’s girl because of her eyes and the emotion I see within.

  58. Helena says:

My fave is #7 because it reminds me of Frida Kahlo, she was all about color and the joy of living – i am a big fan :-)

    Helen — Firenze Cards

  63. Victoria says:

Cathy Nichols #8- I am the Queen of My own Imagination.
This piece kept drawing me back. I enjoyed looking at her so much I had to look her up to enjoy the original picture. The textures and designs are so interesting and the colors pop and compliment each other so well. I love her crown and the red bird on it. Her dress makes her look even more regal and unique. The expression of her imagination is flowing all around her in whimsical beauty.

  64. Tisa at Seattle Retro says:

Patty Van Dorin’s “Explore” art speaks to me–I like the faint compass image & how the traveller seems shadowy or transparent–how I feel when I go somewhere new, like I don’t quite ‘belong’ there so am slightly ‘invisible’. I thought this would make a great Pinterest board cover for the places I’d like to explore myself (if I ever went anywhere anymore!)

  65. Amy in Texas says:

Love Christy’s She Found Color piece. What girl doesn’t love flowers, and a fun hat?

  66. M.Austen says:

  71. Claire says:

I prefer “Donna Mulholland”, because of the feminine grace and the melted colors

  72. Augustine Louise says:

My favourite is Donna Mulholland’s watercolour girl – the way she is almost dissolving into the background, but at the same time a few strong dark strokes keep her in the foreground. Symbolic and ethereal. Love it!

  73. Teresa says:

I love No. 9 by Tamara Laport. I have taken classes and watched tutorials of Tamara and she is fun loving and easy to follow.

  74. Chrstine C Dahlin says:

I’m intrigued by Donna Mulholland art. It’s timeless in it’s woman and beautiful use of colours. Most of all something calls to my subconscience with the facelessness of a woman.

  75. Kelly Rae Roberts face #3 on the grid would be my favorite since many of Kelly’s painted girls seem to speak peace into my soul along with how her painted faces seem to encourage women to be their unique and beautiful selves.

  76. My favourite piece is by Caiti Santa Maria. The simplicity of the lines is so compelling. While I love all of the faces, Caiti’s speaks to me most of all.

  77. P Stevens says:

Such beautiful and varied work… how can you choose a favorite?

#10 Donna Mulholland – it’s sophisticated and yet surreal.

  78. Rita says:

Just discovered Suzie Blu day before yesterday and already was able to get her book from library…love it and hope she incorporates little princes too to match the princesses.

  79. Sue says:

I have to pick one which I like the best … big big decision … they are all wonderful in their own way … but I think Patty Van Dorin’s ‘Explore’ would be my pick …. I love finding new things to use in my art and new ways to create and ‘explore’ says that to me

    Christy’s #6 – I too like possibilities… And I always enjoy Christy’s fanciful creations.

I love them all but my favorite is Suzi Blu, such a wistful, gentle, beautiful face, haunting eyes!

I love everything Suzi Blu does!

  84. Marion says:

my favourite one is Tamara Laporte´s because of the pride she´s expressing …

  85. Laura Kramer says:

Patty Van Dorin has an old look to it, but with a modern edge that makes me want to see into the person who is there but just an outline left for me to understand the person and visualize her.

  86. Carola Bartz says:

My favorite is #7 by Christy Tomlinson. I love the colors, the flowers on the hat of the girl, the heart shaped face and cheeks and the beautiful neckline with the flowers. Looking at this painting just makes me happy and I want to take out my paints and start painting.

  87. Nancy Adkins says:

#10 has that sense of mystery and spontanaeity that I love.

  88. I LOVE THEM ALL. IN PARTICULAR I LIKE CHRISTIE’S #6. THE BAGROUND DOESN’T HIDE ANY OF THE MANY THINGS SHE USED TO MAKE THE WHOLE PIECE. I LIKE DIVERSITY.

  89. Jo Berneche says:

My Favorite is #12 Suzi Blu, Her face draws me in with her haunting eyes, makes me wonder and want to know “what ‘s she thinking?’ There is so much one can imagine with her beautiful expression..
Blue is also my favorite color..Well Done Suzi

  90. Donna Mulholland’s piece seemed to stand out in the grouping of women. Her style and her medium comes together beautify to form a dreamy longing to be seen and yet remain somewhat mysterious.

  91. Donna Mulholland’s piece seemed to stand out in the grouping of women. Her style and her medium comes together beautifully to form a dreamy longing to be seen and yet remain somewhat mysterious.

  92. Matty says:

Kathleen Barnes Image #2 expresses SISTERHOOD, the taller sister seems to be nuturing her smaller sister. The idea of wings and then leaves for wings brings up heavenly and natural images. Sometimes I wish I had a big sister to inspire and encourage me to be more CREATIVE. Kathleens artwork does it for me. but in my mind they are all winners, and I want to win too!

  93. Kelly says:

I love Kelly Rae Roberts’ portrait. I love the combination of art techniques (paint, drawing, collage, splatter, etc) in this one.

  94. Kelly Paquet says:

Number 7, She Found Color, by Christy Tomlinson, is
my favorite. I like her because of the cheerful colors and the background interest – and she seems happy. Because she has no facial features, I can put myself, or a friend in the picture.

  95. Karen Fort says:

I am enchanted by the impressionistic image by Donna Mulholland. The colors are my favorites, but I appreciate the way the figure seems to move with grace and elegance. At the same time, there is lightness, hope, joy expressed in the colors and soft edges. I aspire to this quality of beauty in my artwork.
    K. Fort

  96. maxine finch says:

Love all of them. I love most of these women’s art but this time I was attracted to Donna Mulholland’s
watercolor lady….beautiful lines, very classy look.

  97. Gill says:

My favourite is #2 by Kathleen Barnes. I like the delicate colours & the wings which appear to have been made out of skeleton leaves.

  98. APG Jamie says:

Tamara Laporte, She is more than a face and for me that exhibits what the feminine truly is as a whole. We are body plus – all that encompasses us becomes a part of us, our spirit envelopes not only us but nature, sound, light and so much more.

  99. I love the soft, floating image of Donna Mulholland. The rich colors accentuate the free flowing form! Beautiful image!

  100. julie says:

Patty Van Dorin. The image appears simple at first but, as you look closely, has a lot of complexity.

  101. Carolyn Bennett says:

My favorite is #10- Donna Mulholland. I love the colors, the blue and brown gives a feeling of earth and water, with some sadness from the blue, but it doesn’t feel like a sad picture. I also like that her face is left up to the imagination of the viewer.

  102. #2 Kathleen Barnes–I like them faceless because it allows me to project different personalities on the characters myself. I like the look of angels without the stereotypical wings. I like her style.

  103. Toni L. Marasco says:

Loved the elegance and free flow of Donna Mulholland’s image.

  104. Barb Smith says:

#2 Kathleen Barnes is my favorite. I like the soft ethereal look of the two girls with interesting wings and no faces.

  105. Susan sims says:

Kathleen Barnes: Two best friends..so much alike but one is short, one is tall..one likes red, one likes blue….one likes her hair up…the other not so much…one likes fall, the other spring, one likes frills, the other simple..but they are so much alike and best friends!

  106. Loretta O'Neill says:

Love them all! Hard to choose one fave. Something about #5 by Patty Van Dorin appeals to me… it speaks of a sisterhood among women.

  107. s.delgado says:

i must say that i like #6, by christy tomlinson, best. it is a very hard choice, but her collage of brightly colored papers, painted strokes, stencil work and air of mystery SHE evokes by her layered art is my favorite. this is a classic piece of christy’s. i also appreciate her enthusiasim, willingness to share her knowledge of all things collage and her authentic self:yea!

  108. Jeanne Elliott says:

I love them all, but I choose number 2 by Kathleen Barnes. There is just something about the two figures leaning together that draws me into ‘a conversation’ with them. What are they talking about? What is the story? Also, I like the whimsy of the leaf and butterfly wing.

  109. Laura says:

I truly love all of these beautiful works, but Tamara Laporte’s really stands out and speaks to me.

  110. Carol Sweetapple says:

I love them all but mostly Christie Tomlinson’s work. I follow her and have done most of her workshops.
I am constantly amazed with her generosity and talent and she is not afraid to explore and change her style, two attributes I admire in any woman.

  111. Jan C. says:

    I love the watercolor in #10 especially…gorgeous!
but the mixed media #6 is pretty awesome too!

  112. The #5 is the one that one to me. The woman made from a map and the title explore capture what I feel my life has been about, following a map to not get lost yet making time to explore the back roads I order to not miss out on anything interesting.

  113. I like Patty Van Dorin;s mixed media piece (and her advice to not give up on a page). I like all the layers in it as well as the silhouette of a woman it looks like it is a pattern she is cut out of.

  114. Teresa R says:

4-Caiti Santa Maria – I like the faceless ones and I like the simplicity of this image – -just a color background and the image drawn in black

  115. Christy Tomlinson is such an inspiration to me, oh how I love everything she does! #1 is my fave because when I see angels, I remember my beautiful mom who died 2 yrs. ago August 29. Thank you for the chance to win!

  116. Donna K says:

Patty Van Dorin’s woman #5, can be any woman, as her features are not formed yet. She is free to be her own person, act her own way, dress how she desires, choose what path she wants to take in this world. She has hope and doesn’t follow others just because it’s the fashion.

  117. Lorie says:

#7 Christy Tomlinson, I love the beautiful contrast between the woman’s red head covering and the blue background. So striking!

  118. Christine Kiehl says:

I really enjoyed this article and number 12 Suzi Blu from the Artists Cafe. I love the quote, the color combo, the girls expression full gaze (eyes) and those rosey round cheeks. The cheeks remind me of a marrionette doll who might be waiting for a little girl to come and play with her. Very nice piece. Thank you for the opportunity to win a free issue.

  119. Rebecca Ednie says:

I have so many favorites and in truth, I love them all. But I’ll pick the water colored lady in the bottom left corner. She looks like she could walk down the red carpet or run through a field of daisies; whatever was presented in front if her and look marvelous no matter what! The washed out area just looks magical to me.

  120. Jeanne Kelly says:

My absolute favorite is always Suzi ?blue. There is something about the eyes of her women that make them look so pensive and beautiful ! I just love herr style.

  121. Bev Langby says:

Suzi Blu wins hands down she’s inventive and still sets the bar high, her work is timeless in a modern whimsical way,so vibrant and inspiring…she is one of the founders of this thing we call mixed media art journaling..

  122. Mary Brack says:

Love Patti Van Dorn’s piece with the mixed media look.

  123. Michele Taylor says:

I really like the picture which is a faceless head and neck with the wind blown hair because it truely is every woman completely comfortable in who she is and slightly mussed hair.
The background colors are so soft as well the whole piece says feminine to me.

  124. Patricia Armbrust says:

I love Christy Thomlinson’s work. She has opened up a whole new world for me in mixed media. My work has improved with each project I do with her.

  125. Each artist here is so amazing with their own unique style. My eye will always be drawn to bold colors and there is something to love about each one, but Tamara Laporte’s girl just really speaks to me. I love the freedom of layers and how each layer opens another door for you. Her girl oozes vulnerability and braveness!

  126. April Lopez says:

My favorite is #2. I love the two angels. This reminds me of best friends. I don’t ever see a painting with two figures, it’s usually just one. I really love the feeling of friendship in this piece.

  127. Sophia Vida says:

They are all fabulous but I really love #7 by Christy Tomlinson. The red and blues are so bright, bold and full of life. I also love #10 by Donna Mulholland. I’m a fan of watercolor painting and she is so dreamy and elegant. Almost drifting off the page.

  128. GINGER CHILD says:

    # 10 WITH HER DREAMY, FLOWING COLORS, AND UNDEFINED BODY SEEMS LIKE A WISP OF IMAGINATION LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO LAND!

  129. Lisa Jacobson says:

Donna Mullholland’s tip and lady are my favorite!! It was very hard to choose, but Donna definately hit on the exact reason everyone should Art Journal!!!!

  130. Sheila says:

Very hard to choose.I just wrote about exploring color, so #5 is just jumping out at me. I love the details, and the figure, the color. Very inspiring!

  131. No. 10- Donna Mulholland is the portrait of the woman I am truley drawn to. Her beauty is subtle, yet so very powerful and obvious and done with only using three colours. I love it!
I also love Donna’s advise of using your journal pages as a tool to announce something you dream of doing, like teaching a class or publishing a book. What wonderful insight she has :)

  132. I like number 7,’She Found Color’ by Christy Tomlinson. I love the vibrancy of colors Christy used in this piece and the cohesive background elements which bring together a delightful muse for the senses.

  133. Bobbi in Montana says:

#10, Donna Mulholland. I like her movement, beautiful colors, soothing quality, and clean vibe. I have no particular interest in ballet, so it’s especially neat to be drawn to this piece.

Suzi Blu for sure…am a Suzi Blu fan from way back! She rocks!!

  135. Gail Fairchild says:

#5 Patty Van Dorin – Why: The faceless silhouette is intriguing and mysterious. Plus, I don’t have the knack for drawing. So, anytime I see artwork that I can incorporate the technique into my own work, then I’m all that more inspired. The funny thing is – I think the issue she is in was one of the very first Stampington magazines I ever bought.
Hmmm? I wonder if I still have that issue? :)

  136. Julia Kovac says:

The lady painted by Donna Mulholland is my favorite. She is subtle and mysterious. I love the colors.

All of the submissions are beautiful in their own right, but I find myself drawn towards Suzi Blu’s rendering. I think it is a combination of the colors she uses and the soulful expression of the woman. Good selections!!

  147. Marcie Hixson says:

I love number 4……it draws you in & brings images to the viewers mind as well as viewing what is there.

Donna Mulholland’s beautiful soft rendering from Art Journaling Winter 2012. I love the subtle mix of colours, the dreaminess and how it is almost wistful.

  149. HawaiianLibrarian says:

They are all so fabulous but I am really drawn to the upper right corner because she’s so cocoa-y pensive…graceful, thoughtful, and colorful.

  150. Lauriee Arthur says:

I love #7 by Christy Tomlinson _ It reminds me to grow old gracefully, to enjoy the beauty around me, stopping to smell the roses often. The blue butterfly is a symbol of transformation, God’s gentle touch in my life.

  151. Robin says:

I immediately was drawn to #6by Christy Tomlinson. I was transported to the loving arms of my Mamaw.

  152. Margaret says:

“She had color”, love Christy’s work and spirit.

  153. Sandra Jenkins says:

I love the image by Donna Mulholland. Although, all are beautiful. Donna’s art represents to me the newness of creation in every moment. We flesh in, finish our project and flesh in again. It is exhilarating, joyous to see each color and each completed artwork. It makes one look forward to the next and still be appreciative of the continuous process of creation. Thank You… xoxoxoxo In Love and Light, Sandra J :-)

  156. Erin Glee says:

I love the Suzi Blu Femme! The blue makes me feel beach-on (snicker)….and reminds me of the Suzi video I watched years ago of her creative process and love of her dogs and life near the Ocean…so sweet.

  157. Sasa says:

For me it must be Suzi Blu since she was my first teacher in drawing faces and I learned so much from her. Although at the end we all find our own style I still love her gypsies….

  158. Walena says:

I love #12 by Suzi Blu. I love the colors, dimension and expression of this woman’s face. It is bold and in your face and at the same time gentle and vulnerable(reminds me of myself).

  159. Retta says:

At this very moment…I have to say my favorite is #6 by Christy Tomlinson. I love all of the layers, the textures and her color choices. I see something new each time I look at her girls.
All of the choices are quite lovely.

  160. I cannot wait to get my hands on this magazine!! I draw girls all the time – it is my favorite artsy thing to do! My favorite of all these beauties is Tamara Laporte’s girl. LOVE all the layers and texture!

  161. victoria says:

All beautiful works of art…Tamara Laporte’s work caught my eye(s). The lightness, simplicity, and buttons, wings and hearts…love them all!

  165. Lauri Thomas says:

all are fabulous! Especially love #10!

  166. anita says:

My favorite is Tamara Laporte, Somerset Jan/Feb 2012. The face shows beauty but the depth of it shows much more. It image/face shows the strength and beauty of a mom. While she looks a bit worn she is still beautiful. I love the depth of the facial features and how it allows you to imagine so many things this woman could have done that day.

  167. Theresa Merkling says:

I love them all, but vote for Tamara Laporte, Somerset Studio Jan/Feb 2012. I love the depth and dimension as well as the definition and features. She seems ready to speak out and I’m ready to listen…

I like the anonymity of the feminine faces without eyes and Kathleen Barnes’ advice about allowing theme to lead one in a direction and avoid meandering.

  169. Leeayn says:

#5 – Not only is she stimulating visually, I might be able to make her. I just love all the layers. Any writing on a page excites me.

  170. Deb says:

I loved many of these…such a nice array of techniques and styles. Particularly like the sweet quality of #8, the lovely water color quality of # 10 and the soulful face of #12.

  171. Christina says:

    #5
This image allows the viewer to place their own desires in the open vastness of exploration.

  172. Susan says:

All of the pieces are interesting – of course.
If I have to pick just one – and it appears I do – I would choose #8. I feel like the eyes are looking at me.

  173. Laura Strack says:

I love all these girls and their artist. I am a Christy Tomlinson fan, for sure. Her girl is fun and beautiful. Christy always makes her girls achievable, even if you are a green/newbie artist, like me. Thanks for showing me some other artist to study. Creating women artistically is intriguing to me and now I have some other venues to explore.

  174. Di says:

I love Suzi’s portrait. The expression on her face is stunning. And the blue is so serene.

  175. Joyce says:

  176. Becca says:

#4 speaks to me, it reminds me of my daughter.

The one in the top right corner speaks to me the most. She looks so peaceful, even with a bird on her head!!

  178. Natasha Poteraj says:

The EXPLORE piece of artwork is my favorite. The woman is very traditional, yet the sentiment is not. It encourages her to break out of her usual world and routines, and experience life….

  179. Pat Schafer says:

I love all of them, my favorite would be #1 Christy Tomlinson. Followed by Suzi Blu.

  180. Lisa Stevenson says:

The center picture in the top row #2.
To me it symbolizes a mother and daughter spending time together on a special occasion all dressed up and ready to explore whatever life has to offer.

    • Bethany says:

Aw! That’s a lovely interpretation. Your daughter (aka me) must be one lucky girl to have you as a mom! ;)
      ~ Bethany

  181. leanne says:

I find inspiration in all of them, but at this point in time the Suzi Blu one speaks to me the most. I love it!

  182. Daisy says:

The girl which stands out to me has to be the SUZI BLU image.
She incorporates the fun element, with human looking pretty girls. They show such emotion in their faces.
The backgrounds are so colorful which makes a perfect addition to her artwork in my opinion.
Thanks for the chance to win xx

  183. Maricha says:

I was drawn to – Patty Van Dorin EXPLORE It reminds me in life you don’t know what you don’t know so have an open mind and EXPLORE! :) That is how it speaks to me and would love to have it on my wall to remind me.

Kathleen Barnes art

Tip: “Allow your materials, such as old books and photographs, to inspire the images you choose to journal. Also, having a theme allows you to collect images and ephemera appropriate to that theme and helps get a page started.”

– Kathleen Barnes Art Journaling

Crowned Whimsical Girl“Creating the layers and the grunge style opens up something inside of me that flies freely and breaks boundaries.”

-Tamara Laporte, Somerset Studio

whimsical girlTip: “A journal is a great visualization tool If there’s something new and brave you want to do – like teaching a class or self-publishing a book – create a journal page announcing it. Then you’ll be motivated to really make it happen!”

-Donna Mulholland, Art Journaling

Christy Tomlinson Girl“I have always loved art in one form or another – whether it was through wood fabric, paint, or jewelry.”

-Christy Tomlinson, Artful Blogging

SOM whimsical girlTip: “If you don’t like a page, don’t give up on it…some of my favorite pages are ones that have been painted and worked over many times. The layers will make it more interesting.”

– Patty Van Dorin, Somerset Apprentice
