Adding Layers of Interest: 55+ Stencil Project Ideas

Free Stencil Projects

I’ve only scratched the surface when it comes to using stencils in my artwork. There really are so many interesting ways that they can be incorporated. Paints and spray inks seem to be a match made in heaven when it comes to working with these addictive little artistic templates, but why stop there? Try experimenting with texture paste or embossing powder with stencil designs to add even more texture and dimension.

If you’re looking to gather ideas for adding that “Je ne sais quoi” element to your next project – you’ve come to the right place. We’ve assembled over 55 how-to projects that use stencils in some way, shape, or form. From canvases, gift tags, and art journal pages to cards, mixed-media projects, and even fabric applications, browse this new collection of Stenciled Projects for inspiration and step-by-step tutorials that will help you stretch outside your creative comfort zone.

Dare to test your artistic limits for #NationalCraftMonth, and try incorporating stencils into your artwork in the following ways:

Embossing Stencil Technique

1) Make Stencil Designs Stand-out with Embossing Powder
Add texture to your next piece by applying an embossing inkpad as if it were a sponge through your desired stencil design. After removing the stencil, sprinkle on embossing powder, and use a heat gun to quickly dry it. Stampington & Company’s Director of Publishing shares this, and a few more stenciling techniques, here.

Custom iPad Case Project2) Stencil on Fabric:
Personalize a bag to tote around your art supplies or groceries, or customize your own iPad case. Because stencils offer a way to rapidly and consistently produce letters or design patterns, adding them to alternate surfaces like fabric need not be intimidating.  Gift idea: Using an alphabet stencil, create monogrammed burlap bags and matching journals for a creative friend.

Stenciling with Gesso3) Stencil with Gesso or Texture Paste
Use a palette knife to apply gesso or texture paste to a canvas project, journal page, or gift tag for an elevated, dimensional effect.

Alphabet Stencils Project4) Stencil Your Favorite Word, Phrase, or Quote onto Something You See Daily

Do you keep a journal on your nightstand, or need something more artistic to hang on that bare, boring wall? Stencil your favorite word, phrase, or quote onto a journal cover, wall canvas, or other similar item for inspiration and to remind yourself, daily, of what is important.

I don’t know about you, but no one has manufactured, or captured, my favorite quote into a stencil, yet. Don’t let this stop you. Try using an alphabet stencil for the first letter of one or more select words, and then handwriting the rest of the letters in your own script. This mini art journal project, which reminds us all to “Slow Down” and “Breathe,” demonstrates this concept.
