Editor Spotlight: Amber Demien, Where Women Cook, and Comfort Food
Today’s Editor Spotlight is from Amber Demien. She discusses her passion for Where Women Cook and what this publication means to her. The latest issue of Where Women Cook arrives on newsstands June 1st.
With over 30 arts and crafts magazines on the market, I have the honor of managing Stampington & Company’s only cooking magazine — Where Women Cook. In my role as executive consulting editor I work with creator Jo Packham, who began the magazine as a sister publication to Where Women Create. Where Women Cook explores the heart and soul of cooking by featuring mouthwatering recipes along with the stories and kitchens of the women behind them.
As a lover of food — and I mean all food — the content of this magazine is my dream come true as an editor. From the gorgeous, mouth-watering photography, to discovering interesting new ingredients, to learning tips that make cooking easier, editing the recipes in Where Women Cook feels more like reading for pleasure than actual work. Have you ever heard the expression “Don’t grocery shop when you’re hungry,” the implication being that you’ll buy everything in the store? Well, I can say from experience that working on a cooking magazine when you’re hungry poses the same peril — even when you’re not hungry, for that matter!
While I’m a fan of food in general, I am the #1 fan of comfort food. My first consideration when planning a meal isn’t the health factor (though it should probably be), it’s how the meal will make everyone feel … and what’s better than comfort? And comfort food goes hand in hand with family, which is at the heart of so many of the articles in Where Women Cook. Whether you’re a picky eater or a self-proclaimed “foodie,” there are those certain ingredients and dishes that are tied to memories and people. From the foods your mom and dad prepared for you as a child, to family dinners, to holiday gatherings and even dinner with friends, food is often shared with those you love.
It is truly such a pleasure to be part of a magazine that explores food because, for me, that means being part of something that stands for home and family and memories … and it doesn’t get much better than that.
Amber Demien is the senior managing editor at Stampington & Company. She is the managing editor of Art Journaling, Art Quilting Studio, Somerset Holidays & Celebrations, and Artists’ Cafe. She is also the executive consulting editor of Where Women Cook and Where Women Create BUSINESS. When not at work, Amber can be found watching cartoons with her 9-year-old son, deep within the pages of a good book, or in the midst of a Netflix binge.
