Get Inspired with the Latest Issues of Art Journaling and Somerset Studio
This month’s new issues of Art Journaling and Somerset Studio were so great that we couldn’t resist sharing the inside scoop. From paper dolls on parade to decadent art journal pages, here’s our favorites from the latest issues.
Art Journaling:
“Playing with colors in my journals is one way I indulge my curiosity. To open up and relax, there needs to be a surface ready to catch me — like flying on a trapeze and needing a huge net.” Heather Kindt explores different journal surfaces and techniques in her art journals, focusing on compositions centered around people and what makes them tick.
Marta Turska-Grochocka shares how she art journals in every free moment that she can spare from her “mother-teacher-singer” time. When discussing her creative process, Marta says “I have a general plan in my head. For example: I will use these colors, I will use lace, I will add some stamps. But as I go through the process, sometimes it becomes soemthing else: the lace didn’t fit or the colors are terrible. Then I create spontaneously.”
“This art journal was centered on words — words that I dwelled on and clung to during such a difficult time.” Kate Yetter’s art journal focused on grief after a miscarriage and contained the words that she needed to hear during that difficult time.
After taking inventory of her supplies, Kate Yetter created this vintage circus art journal to celebrate her childhood memories in a piece of artwork. Described as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience,” this art journal recaptures her childlike excitement of going to the circus.
Jennifer Bomgardner shares her pages from her page a day challenge and tips for creating a piece of her art journal every day, like working quickly, and not overthinking the page beforehand.
Peggy Gatto created this journal with paste paper and worked her compositions so that she left as much of the paper visible as possible, allowing the lovely, dreamy blue hues to remain.
Somerset Studio:
“My creative muse is kindled by the worn edges and color of old paper. Vintage paper offers an excellent background for all kinds of mixed-media art. It is subtle, interesting, and adds character and charm to almost any piece.” Repurpose vintage book pages and ephemera with Cheryl Dossey.
Dalia Blevins shares 14+ designs using the same paper doll stamp. Creating cards using only one stamp can be a fun way to keep your imagination alive and vibrant.
“I paint self-portraits because I am the person I know best.” — Frida Kahlo | Sara Hanlon swaps the heads and bodies on her paper dolls to create a 1920s and Downton Abbey-inspired set of cards.

I absolutely adore all these journal pages, but I especially love Kate Yetter’s Vintage Circus Art Journal, which also evokes childhood circus memories for me and Peggy Gatto’s journal page which reminds me of the wild flower book tags my grandmother use to make and Dalia Blevin’s paper dolls just pull my heart strings! So grateful for this inspired life! Thank you Stampington!
