Watercolor Pencil Techniques for Coloring + Faber-Castell Giveaway!
There’s an entire world of possibilities with watercolor pencils that most people don’t know about. Don’t just blend with water, but try these 5 watercolor pencil techniques to create a textured and colorful work of art.
Choose from any of our Coloring Studio Gift Bundles to get started creating your very own watercolor masterpiece.
For this coloring page by Mary Chamberlain, I combined all the different techniques on different parts of the page. The mixing and matching creates a lot of interesting textures and it is the unified color palette that ties the whole page together.
1. Watercolor with Gesso Blend Technique
This technique creates an almost ethereal appearance. It is very similar to the traditional watercolor technique in appearance, but lightens everything up just a touch so that the colors all become matte and muted.
Color the entire page as desired with watercolor pencils, then blend the page with a layer of gesso. Work only one color at a time, and rinse in between. If the color becomes too pale, you can let everything dry, then repeat the process using a more watered down gesso.
2. Pencil Shavings Technique
Begin with a basic color wash or a blank page. Using a pocket knife, create small shavings of lead and allow them to fall randomly on the page. Spritz page with a mister or spray bottle to develop the color on the page.
3. Wet Watercolor Pencil Technique
This technique creates a smoother line and doesn’t require any additional blending. Dip the watercolor pencil directly into the water to create a smooth line of vivid color. You can also redip the pencil as needed to blend out any imperfections.
4. Traditional Watercolor Pencil Technique
For the traditional technique, color your page with watercolor pencil, then blend with a waterbrush.
This technique requires very little water and you can get good control of the pigments if you use a waterbrush.
5. Dry Watercolor Pencil
Watercolor pencils can also be used in the same way as colored pencils. This is great when looking to fill small areas that would bleed when blended with water.

I liked the idea of using gesso with watercolor pencils. Will be interesting to explore this technique.
Really enjoy the pastel type effect the gesso lends the watercolor pencil; + it makes it permanent to additional layers.
Pencil shaving technique is my favorite.
I recently learned to put down the blobs of color first and ink afterwards. I use a water brush and touch the tips of my pencils so I don’t have to carry a water container.

I like the effect I get with water colors, how easy it is to shade, depth of color if I want. Couldn’t you use the shavings from when you sharpen your pencil? Oooh, going to try that. Thanks for the idea.
I love smooching with watercolors. Great way to make cards. Shared the pencil shavings on fb.
I really liked the pencil shaving technique. I never thought of doing that with my pencils. Thanks for the ideas and the opportunity to win such a great giveaway.

I saved the first picture on my pinterest page under “Coloring Books”!
The technique of watercolor pencil shaving is intriguing, I have always felt wasteful throwing away the shavings now I will use them for background filler…thanks for the idea!
I like creating a ‘wash’ of colour, smoothed w/a brush, then a light sprinkling of salt to draw the colours. It’s a lighter technique, though similar to, the “pencil shavings” you show above. I, too, would like to work with gesso as a new option! And would love to have the mix of colours shown in the Gift-Pack-Win above!
I do not have a favorite technique with watercolor pencils yet, but am eager to try them and experiment with them to see what can be done.
I want to try these techniques on my coloring studio pages!
Such inspiration. I can’t wait to try this!
I like the pencil shaving technique. Something I will try in the near future. Thanks for sharing all these great ideas.
One of my favorite watercolor pencil techniques is to overlap the dry pencil marks with other colors and then watch them run and blend together when you went them.
I love using watercolor pencils and would enjoy trying the Faber-Castell brand. I pinned at: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/265571709257422953/

I never ever thought of using gesso with water color pencils. I use these pencils a lot especially in journaling. I can’t wait to try out these techniques mixing water color pencils and gesso washes. I like the pencil shaving and gesso techniques.
I like the gesso technique. I want to try it! Love those Faber-Castell pencils! Thank you for the chance!
Love these ideas, thanks
WOW! First I tried the gesso wash to get a beautiful muted background. Next, I tried shaving several colors of pencil lead and spritzing with water! AMAZINGLY simple techniques result in a wonderful contrast of muted background with bright bold bits of color floating on top. The razzle dazzle effect! Everything depends on your control of how much gesso/water used in the wash and the amount of water spritzed! There’s lots of variations available just by varying the amount of wet you use in both techniques! LOVE IT!!!!
shared on Facebook! Love these ideas
Love the way water color pencils blend.

I like to use the couple of watercolor pencils I have with simple stamped images. I only color in a couple of spots, very lightly, then add water.
After shading and blending colors, going over them with a water brush and letting the piece dry, I bring in other media — often ink and marker — to make some areas pop. Thanks.
I love to use watercolor pencils to color in images I have stamped on watercolor paper and then of course us a refillable waterbrush pen on it afterword. These images can then be cut out and used in card or ACT making. Blending colors is easy and the water pen makes project working portable.
I like the wet pencil technique.
I love how there are so many ways that can be done with watercolors, my favorite is simply to color with the pencils and use a damp paint brush to bring my art to life. Love love love watercolors!!
I like using the Wet technique as the colour spreads out in some many ways.

Love the look of the Watercolor Pencil Technique. Spurred my creative juices, which have been lying dormant for so long. Perhaps, this will bring them to the surface and add some joy to my life. Yes! Thank you so much for all your art! :)
I enjoy the pencil shavings technique but any use of water color is always enjoyable
Great Work! I’ll try these 5 watercolor pencil techniques.
