Affordable Ways to Organize Your Craft Stash

Affordable Ways to Organize Your Craft Stash

If your New Year’s Resolution was to get organized or you are prepping for some heavy-duty spring cleaning, then you’ll love our ideas for organizing your craft stash! If you’re anything like me, you can’t remember what color your desk is because it’s been so long since it was clean. Any sudden movements result in an avalanche of stacks of paper, boxes of pens, and piles of washi tape.

Here are some quick and effective ways to corral the art supplies and create a visually stunning place to create.

Think Outside the Box

Boxes are great for storing art supplies and organizing your craft stash, but most boxes aren’t  pretty to look at. Explore other options for storing your art supplies that will enhance your work space and inspire you to create.

These vintage drawers have darling vintage-inspired details that are an eye-catching solution to the desktop clutter.

Vintage suitcases provide an elegant display solution for craft supplies. Stack some old leather suitcases in the corner to fill with papers, ephemera, and more. Everyone will appreciate your taste in antiques, and no one will know that they are looking at your craft stash.

Hang It Up

Hangers are a wonderful way to get supplies up and out of the way. Hang up your papers, fabric samples, or artwork to keep it easy-to-reach without cluttering your creative space. Use hangers to clip small baggies of ephemera so that they are always on hand and ready to use.

Even a string with some clothespins can turn a pile into an instant inspiration board.

Use What You Have On Hand

Rinse out old jars and decorate to create an easy way to store washi tapes, pens and pencils, or buttons.

Tin cans also provide the great foundation for creating all sorts of organizational solutions. Attach a few to create a desktop organizer, or use them in drawers to create dividers for your markers and paints.

Organize By Color

If hiding away your supplies isn’t an option, but you still want a cleaner look, consider organizing items by color. Stacking reds with reds and blues with blues can create a more unified, cohesive look while still having your supplies close at hand. Stephanie Miller Corfee stacked her supplies by color, creating a calming and organized display.

Invest in a few statement pieces

For crafters with very large craft stashes, you may want to invest in a big furniture piece to store your supplies. You’ll save a lot of money in the long run if you forgo the hundreds of plastic bins and just get a larger armoire to begin with. Jeanne Oliver’s antique cabinet provides storage for loads of supplies, and is a beautiful focal point for the room.

I have found some toiletry organizer bags that unroll and can be hung from a hook in the bathroom when you travel. There four clear plastic and triangular shaped containers I have stuffed with all my different lace stash, organized by types and colours. The containers can also be removed very handy for working and when not in use look very nice on the wall…. .

I have some great antique pieces of furniture for storing my supplies. I have an old mug shot cabinet that holds all the different kinds of paper I use. I think there are 20 drawers. for my sewing supplies, I have an antique spool cabinet.
I am a collector of found objects, they are stored in an old library card catalog file. My brushes, pens etc are stored in an old file drawer that is divided. My fabrics are stored in a reproduction storage bin from Pier 1. I have two of them stacked on top of each other.

Now this is the inspiration I need to clean up my wonderful mess!

I use empty fruit containers to store my washi tape & other small craft supplies. I like them because they’re clear. I can see what I have without having to open the box.
