Caption Contest with a Twist - Artful Blogging Autumn 2013~Photograph by Tracia Whitmer from the pages of Artful Blogging Winter 2014

Inspiration comes in many shapes and forms — sometimes it’s a found object, sometimes it comes from our animal companions, and sometimes it’s simply the beauty of nature. Whatever the case may be, inspiration has a funny way of rousing different parts of our mind. The right image at the right time can conjure colors, words, sounds, and feelings, all of which can lead to the creation of new art or the appreciation of old masterpieces.

For example, while flipping through the pages of the autumn 2013 issue of Artful Blogging, I saw Tracia Whitmer’s photograph of a lonesome road bathed in sunlight. I immediately thought of “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost:

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere age and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

What quote, poem, song, or narrative does this photograph remind you of?

  1. Roberta Helzer says:

My favorite photo is the road in fall.
    My caption…
The long and winding road leads me straight to you.
    (Beatles song)
I heard it in my head as I enjoyed the photograph. My daughter now lives in WV and I take many a long and winding road to see her!

  2. Dawn M. Muir says:

For the road photo, here is my caption:
It doesn’t matter where you are, it doesn’t matter where you go
If it’s a million miles away or just a mile up the road
Take it in, take it with you when you go,
Who says you can’t go home
From Bon Jovi, Who says you can’t go home

  3. Tisa@ChicTiquesCafe says:

Love Tara Morris’ photo from Artful Blogging–it brought this quote from Peter Pan to mind–
“I’m youth, I’m joy, I’m a little bird that has broken out of the egg.”
― J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan: Peter and Wendy

  4. cindy coven says:

Tara’s photo; i just know there’s a fairy on one of these leaves.

Tracia Whtmer photo: My 5 year old grandson saw her photo looking over my shoulder her said”Oh look Grammy. Somebody’s going to Heaven.” That’s my quote. [thanks chase]

  5. Jan Bianchi says:

I love the winding road Photograph by Tracia Whitmer–reminds me of my poem I wrote called:
    Homeward Bound:
Did I look within the hidden recesses far enough
to see my full potential? Did I see the latent beauty developing like a picturesque portrait of
blooming mustards in early springtime? Did I appreciate the delays and back roads taken along
    the way as I went?

My fullness now. My joyful beauty,
Coming back to me in full circle.

My hands and heart are open.
I embrace my gift with a voice daring to speak.
The very truths I sought and have since endured,
to this enduring place within me I now call, Home.

    Corrected Version:

I love the winding road Photograph by Tracia Whitmer–reminds me of my poem I wrote called: Homeward Bound: Did I look within the hidden recesses far enough to see my full potential? Did I see the latent beauty developing like a picturesque portrait of blooming mustards in early springtime? Did I appreciate the delays and backroads taken along the way as I went?

My fullness now. My joyful bounty, coming back to me in full circle. My hands and heart are open. I embrace my gift with a voice daring to speak.
The very truths I sought and have since endured,

  7. Michelle sickels-weidman says:

My fav photo is the child with the leaves
” this one is beautiful. And this one. And…”

  8. Barbara B says:

I love the photo of the girl with the leaf. The perfect quote to compliment it would be “Never say there is nothing beautiful in the world anymore. There is always something to make you wonder in the shape of a tree, the trembling of a leaf.”
    Albert Schweitzer

  9. Kim Gaynor says:

I love the road photograph. My caption:

“What is more beautiful than a road? It is the symbol and the image of an active, varied life. George Sand”

    or

“I remember it as October days are always remembered, cloudless, maple-flavored, the air gold and so clean it quivers. ― Leif Enger, Peace Like a River”

  10. Lila says:

I chose the country road and my caption would be:

A country road is like motherhood; you never know what is coming around the bend.

  11. Darlene says:

I love the road photograph. Two quotes:

“All roads lead to promise.” (my own quote)

“The road that leads to nowhere for others might just be the road that leads to somewhere for you!”
    ― Mehmet Murat ildan

  12. Darlene says:

I want to revise my quote:

“Every road offers the potential of promise.” (my own quote)

  13. Angela says:

my quote is for the road image! It’s beautiful!
“Always be on the look out for the presence of wonder.” -E.B. White

  14. Sandra H. says:

The picture of the little girl looking at the leaf is just beautiful. Such concentration. I remember a song by Patsy Cline titled “If I Could See the World Through The Eyes of a Child” and the first verse continues with ‘what a wonderful world this would be’. Amen to that.

  15. Becca Feeken says:

The road image is completely breathtaking and I’m sure brings back memories to many that require no words – just seeing it makes me think my heart knows that place. Walt Whitman has a quote that reflects the optimism and complete fulfillment of such a journey.

“Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road.
Healthy, free, the world before me.
The long brown path before me leading me wherever I choose.
Henceforth, I ask not good fortune, I myself am good fortune.
Henceforth, I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing.”

  16. Lisa Cousins says:

    Tara’s Photo- Stay Gold

    Nothing Gold Can Stay
    Robert Frost, 1874 – 1963
    Nature’s first green is gold,
    Her hardest hue to hold.
    Her early leaf’s a flower;
    But only so an hour.
    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
    Nothing gold can stay.

  17. JoRene Byers says:

This is my caption for the charming photograph by Tara Morris in Artful Blogging, Summer 2014:

“To look at a thing is very different from seeing a thing. One does not see anything until one sees its beauty.” ~ Oscar Wilde
