Guest Artist Dina Wakley: Watercolor With Your Acrylics

Add just a bit of water to your acrylic paint and you can get a watercolor effect that is lovely and easy to achieve. Here we loosely paint a stamped image to create a lovely piece that you can frame or put on a small easel as is.

Supplies:

Instructions:

1. Apply gesso to a flower from Scribbly Flowers and stamp onto watercolor cardstock. Repeat until you have many gesso images. Set it aside to dry.

Step 1

2. Stamp a flower from Scribbly Flowers with black Archival ink onto watercolor cardstock. Also stamp a sentiment from Just What to Say.

Step 2

3. Water down some Evergreen, Ocean, Blushing and Fuchsia paints and loosely paint in the flower. Be sure to leave some of the areas unpainted as a highlight. For the flower, I like to start with the lightest color (Blushing). Then add a tiny bit of Ocean and a tiny bit of Fuchsia.

4. Water down some Elephant paint and paint a loose square around the flower. Also paint some color over your stamped sentiment. I used Fuchsia.

5. Water down some Ocean paint and paint a wash over the gesso-stamped flowers. The gesso flowers will resist the watery paint and you get a cool background effect.

6. Paint a piece of Media Board with Elephant paint.

7. While the paint is wet, press a scrunched-up paper towel into it to get a nice texture.

8. When everything is dry, edge the board with printed Dina Wakley Media tape.

9. Tear a piece of of the Ocean background and glue it to the board. Cut out your sentiment and flower. Mount the flower over the blue background strip and your sentiment over the flower with foam tape for added dimension.

    I love how versatile Dina’s acrylic paints are! It’s so easy to get this watercolor effect by watering them down a bit but still have great color!
